GC14A:
Advances in Monitoring and Reporting Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions and Sinks Across Land Use Categories I

Submit an Abstract to this Session

Session ID#: 58873

Session Description:
The demand for spatially and temporally resolved activity data, along with improved measurement and modeling approaches to estimate GHG emissions and removals from the land sector continues to grow. The need is driven by carbon markets (e.g., California’s Cap-and-Trade Program), international reporting requirements, and new standards established through policy programs (e.g., the global stock-take associated with the Paris Agreement). Furthermore, the continuing efforts to reduce emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries (REDD+) also drives this demand, along with interest in the 4 per mille soil carbon initiative. This session focuses on scientific advancements in support of monitoring, reporting, and verification of anthropogenic GHG emissions and removals across all land use categories. Advancements in monitoring will improve reporting of GHG emissions and sinks, informing scientists, policy makers, and land managers about the impact of existing land use policies and practices, and will help to inform future mitigation activities.
