Advancing Global Surface Biology and Geology Science with Visible to Short-Wavelength Infrared Imaging Spectroscopy and Thermal Infrared Measurements II

Session Description:
We review the science and applications of recent airborne imaging spectrometer and thermal infrared imager campaigns in the United States, India, and elsewhere.  These will underpin continuing development of a future NASA global mission for full spectrum reflectance and thermal infrared imagery.  In the next decade, with this new capability, we foresee collection of vital information on the state of Earth’s geosphere, biosphere, and hydrosphere.  This session will also highlight methodologies and scaling issues relevant to global Surface Biology and Geology measurement prioritized by the 2017 Earth Science and Applications Decadal Survey.  

Our themes include: coral reef surveys; volcano investigations; surface ecology and biodiversity studies; aquatic ecosystem and water quality monitoring; hydrology studies, including ice and snow characterization; land use studies; and more.  Today’s research in these areas provides a strong foundation to utilize global spectroscopic and thermal infrared measurements in the future, and advances urgent new Earth science objectives.
