Mechanisms of Low-Frequency Ocean–Atmosphere Variability and Implications for Earth’s Energy Budget I

Session Description:
Observations suggest that large-scale atmosphere-ocean coupling moderates regional warming on decadal-to-centennial timescales. For instance, global warming-induced shifts in the storm tracks and Hadley Cell edge will evoke a response in Southern Ocean circulation. Understanding low-frequency ocean-atmosphere variability requires understanding how the atmospheric circulation changes impact ocean circulations and, in turn, how the ocean’s response feeds back on these changes in atmospheric circulation. This session aims to discuss the role of ocean-atmosphere coupling in low-frequency variability and climate change, as well as the influence of slowly evolving SST patterns on Earth’s energy budget. We invite observational, modeling, and theoretical studies that advance our mechanistic understanding of topics such as:
1. Mechanisms of climate variability on interannual to multidecadal timescales
2. Radiative impacts of modes of variability (e.g., ENSO, AMO, PDO)
3. Global energy budget changes during hiatus and surge periods
4. Applications to climate predictability
