Fingerprinting the Anthropocene: Observing and Understanding Social Change Across Earth's Landscapes I

Session Description:
Human transformation of landscapes is both ancient and accelerating across most of Earth's land surface. Mass urbanization and rising per capita resource use are driving agricultural intensification, large-scale land acquisitions and global supply chain demands that are reshaping landscapes globally. The large-scale impacts of globalizing societies are profoundly altering Earth’s topography, climate, ecosystems, biodiversity, soil physical and chemical properties, and associated earth surface processes. Remote sensing is essential for monitoring these social dynamics in landscape form and functioning, towards understanding and addressing their causes and consequences for both societies and non-human nature. This session focuses on research aimed at advancing technologies for observing and understanding socially-driven changes in landscapes from local to global scale, from prehistory to present, including remote sensing, machine learning, big data analytics and other empirical and modelling approaches. Technological advances are critical if societies are to recognize, assess and address rapid social changes in Earth's surface.
