Session Description:
Capabilities for observing and modeling lightning and thunderstorm electrification have improved considerably in recent years. Interferometers, Lightning Mapping Arrays, long-range lightning detection, high-speed video, polarimetric radars, and in-situ measurements have provided critical new information concerning lightning physics and storm electrification. High spatial and temporal resolution observations from both ground-based and satellite-based lightning detection systems also provide crucial new insights into thunderstorm properties. These capabilities continue to help further develop the relationships and understanding between lightning physics and the storm properties that affect electrification processes and lightning activity.
Additionally, computational advances have enabled increasingly sophisticated models treating these phenomena. These advances have led to new lightning climatologies, to new approaches forecasting lightning occurrence, and to new methods for assimilating lightning observations into numerical weather prediction models. This session topic invites abstracts dealing with any of these themes. Abstracts describing the development of related observing technologies and computer algorithms also are invited.
