Isotope and Trace Element Incorporation in Marine Calcifiers: Cracking the Biomineralization Code to Improve Paleoceanographic Reconstructions I

Session Description:
Paleoceanographic proxies that rely on the isotopic and trace element composition of marine calcifiers are fundamental tools for reconstructing oceanographic conditions. Fossil groups including foraminifera, corals, bivalves, and other marine calcifiers have been instrumental for reconstructing ocean temperature, pH, salinity, and circulation. Over the past several decades, technological advancements have permitted unparalleled improvements in our understanding of biomineralization processes and led to advancements in the application and utility of calcite-based proxies. This session aims to highlight recent advances in our understanding of calcification processes and paleoceanographic proxy development and application. We welcome submissions from field, culture, and fossil studies that advance the utility of traditional proxies and/or introduce novel TE/isotopic proxies that can be used to improve our knowledge of past climate change on all times scales, inform climate modeling efforts and improve our understanding of future climate change.
