Looking Back, You Know It’s Hot: Climate Reconstructions from the Mesozoic and Cenozoic Warm Intervals II

Session Description:
Exceptionally warm intervals have occurred throughout the Mesozoic (e.g., OAEs) and Cenozoic (e.g., the PETM, Eocene hyperthermals, late Oligocene warming event, middle Miocene Climatic Optimum, mid-Pliocene Warm Period, and Pleistocene–Late Pliocene "super-interglacials"). These intervals affected the evolution of life, caused significant changes to the climate system (including atmospheric composition and ocean circulation), and impacted the distribution and preservation of natural resources. However, the timing, duration, intensity, and the global expression of many warm intervals remains enigmatic. This session focuses on documenting warm periods throughout the Mesozoic and Cenozoic, and especially understanding the mechanisms and processes related to warm climate states. Understanding globally warm intervals hinges on feedbacks and processes that link many parts of the Earth system; therefore, submissions focused on paleoclimatology, paleobiogeography, and paleoecology, as well as reconstructions of sea surface temperatures, circulation, sea level, and ice sheets covering a range of latitudes are welcome.
