Session Description:
An asteroid impact on the Yucatán platform 66 Ma caused the Cretaceous-Paleogene mass extinction, which is probably the only major event in Earth history that happened faster than modern anthropogenic climate change. Thus, the responses of the biosphere and the ocean-climate system to this rapid perturbation represent important partial analogs for modern changes in biodiversity and climate. Clear understanding of impact processes is fundamental to reconstructing the effects of the Chicxulub Impact, and collaboration between the paleo and impact communities is essential. Here, we aim to bring together Paleontologists, Paleoceanographers, Paleoclimatologists, Geophysicists, Modelers, Impact Petrologists, Paleomagnetists, and scientists from related fields to foster interdisciplinary collaboration to better understand the effects of the Chicxulub Impact. Contributions related to crater formation and modification, hydrothermal system development, global and regional environmental change, extinction, and ecosystem recovery are welcome.
