Developing Climate, Public Health, and Citizen Science Services to Predict and Prevent Climate-Sensitive Health Risks and Serve the Public Good

Session Description:
Climate variability and extreme events affect human health and well-being through multiple environmental pathways resulting in increased heat-related mortality and illness, and changes in climate-sensitive diseases. Heatwaves are on the rise around the world, affecting urban populations, outdoor workers, children and productivity. Disease outbreaks, such as Zika, Dengue and other water-related illness also affect communities, economies and can destabilize regions, posing threats to national security. Advances in climate prediction make the potential to predict, plan for, and reduce climate-sensitive health impacts a real possibility. This session will focus on the development of climate-related information and services, as well as institutional cooperation and collaboration, to mitigate health-related risks. We will address various aspects of developing and expanding services and enhancing health and security, including technical methods and modeling; the use of earth observations; the role of sustained interdisciplinary collaboration; decision maker engagement strategies; institutional relationships and network development; and transboundary/transnational cooperation.
