Climate Influences on Infectious Disease Dynamics and the Potential for Transnational Outbreaks I

Session Description:
Infectious disease dynamics can be impacted by climate in several ways. Mean annual climate conditions can broadly define the spatial extent of a disease. On finer scales, local climate and weather can influence the abundance of both disease organisms and hosts, leading to changes in disease transmission and incidence. When environmental conditions are favorable, disease vectors combined with human behavior may cause localized outbreaks which can cross international borders. Climate change may exacerbate these impacts, possibly shifting the geographical distribution or incidence of infectious diseases and creating more favorable conditions for outbreaks. Recent Ebola and Zika virus outbreaks demonstrated how infectious diseases have strong environmental controls that could be helpful in predicting their reemergence and spread. We are seeking research focused on connections between the environment and infectious disease dynamics and forecasts of emerging pandemic threats. We encourage submissions from all disciplines, including public health, environmental, social, and political sciences.
