Cassini’s Legacy: Atmospheric, Magnetospheric, and Heliospheric Discovery I

Session Description:
Cassini’s stunning Grand Finale and its historic 13-year mission have provided unprecedented insights into the Saturn system; the planet, its rings, atmosphere and the dynamic interactions that interlink them. Pioneering instrumentation such as the first dedicated energetic neutral atom camera, a fields and particles suite and a comprehensive optical remote sensing instrument suite has enabled a full exploration of the Saturn system. Among the landmark results are the seasonal studies of Saturn’s magnetosphere and atmosphere from northern winter through summer solstice and the first observations of the edge of our heliosphere from a platform beyond Earth. Cassini’s last orbits probed unexplored territory with up-close and in situ observations of the planet, rings, atmosphere, and magnetosphere from which their complex interaction is just being realized. From Cassini’s contributions to heliospheric, magnetospheric and atmospheric science, this combined session outlines extraordinary results and paradigm shifts associated with our evolving understanding of Saturn’s system.
