GRACE-FO and ICESat-2: NASA’s Newest Missions for Cryospheric Science I

Session Description:
NASA will launch two new missions in 2018 that enable studies of our changing cryosphere by extending the record of observations from the GRACE and ICESat missions. GRACE Follow-On will track global mass change and transport by making monthly maps of the Earth’s gravity field using intersatellite microwave ranging. It also carries a technology demonstration instrument to measure intersatellite range using laser interferomtery, which ultimately enables improved mass change estimates. ICESat-2 will measure ice sheet volume changes using a 6-beam laser altimeter with photon-counting detection to measure elevation. Together, mass change and altimetry observations yield essential observations to quantify processes and mechanisms that influence cryospheric change. This session solicits submissions that: showcase the achievements of GRACE and ICESat; demonstrate the advantages of combining these two disparate measurements; look forward to studies with GRACE-FO and ICESat-2, including initial observations; and studies that assess optimally linking past, current, and future cryosphere observations.
