Preliminary Discoveries from the 2015–2018 Shackleton Glacier Deep Field Camp, Antarctica I

Session Description:
The U.S. National Science Foundation and U.S. Antarctic Program supported a deep field camp at the Shackleton Glacier in the Transantarctic Mountains. This camp facilitated more than a dozen interdisciplinary science projects over 3 field seasons from 2015–2018, with the final season having 2 helicopters providing support from the camp’s remote location. In this session, representatives from Shackleton Camp projects will report their initial discoveries that advance fundamental questions about Antarctica’s modern and paleoenvironments, and elucidate how Antarctic science represents a keystone to understanding global systems and processes. Projects include studies of: Neogene-Quaternary ice sheet history, Cenozoic landscape evolution, modern and Permo-Triassic ecological communities and environments, and Neoproterozoic-Neogene tectonics and volcanism.
