Session Description:
Today’s rapid pace of discovery in Cryospheric science owes much to the hard work and inspiration of researchers and explorers over the past century, from early Polar expeditions in search of a Northwest Passage and the South Pole, Louis Agassiz’s Studies on Glaciers, James Church’s snow measurements, and the establishment of global monitoring networks. These pioneering efforts set the foundation for our modern perspective on interwoven climate, ocean, snow, ice, and permafrost systems studied through international collaborations and modelling efforts.
This session inaugurates our year-long AGU Centennial Celebration with a retrospective look connecting our Cryospheric research legacy to current questions and challenges. How did we get here? What advances and discoveries built our science? What have we learned from past successes and failures? What untapped troves of data remain to be mined for insight? The session will combine invited contributions and a panel discussion featuring established and early career researchers.
