Session Description:
Solar eruptions, CMEs and coronal jets, represent an explosive release of stored coronal magnetic energy. It is generally believed that eruptions are driven by the action of core magnetic structures, often observed as solar filaments, that take the form of either a sheared magnetic arcade or a magnetic flux rope. This session is focused on research efforts that address the origin and creation of core magnetic structures and their evolution leading to eruption onset. Key questions include (1) what is the key process of creating the core structure? (2) how does the core structure evolve in the corona in response to photospheric motions? (3) what mechanism triggers the eruption? This session invites contributions that explore the present state of observations and theory regarding the energy buildup and triggers for solar eruptions, and aims to focus research efforts ahead of the upcoming Parker Solar Probe and Solar Orbiter missions.
