Large-Scale Moist Circulations and Tropical Variability I

Session Description:
Large-scale moist circulations represent a grand challenge for the field of atmospheric sciences because of the inherent two-way coupling between the large-scale circulation and diabatic heating from clouds and moisture. Moist circulations further complicate our ability to understand and predict variability within the climate system, particularly in the Tropics. Despite recent advances, gaps remain in our understanding and ability to simulate observed patterns of variability related to moist circulations. Bridging these gaps requires theoretical, observational, and modelling efforts aimed at understanding the linkages between moisture and the large-scale circulation, as well as between variability and forcing, both natural and anthropogenic. We invite contributions which seek to understand the interaction between moist- or cloud-processes and the large scale atmospheric circulation, as well as those covering tropical variability across a variety of timescales making use of theoretical, observational, and computational strategies to further our understanding.
