Characterizing Regolith and Subsurface Volatiles on Icy and Rocky Bodies II

Session Description:
The surfaces of airless worlds like the Moon and icy satellites are covered with impact-generated rock and ice regolith layers. Processes such as impact gardening, sputtering, mass wasting, sintering will alter the regolith, driving the evolution of its morphology, mechanical and thermal characteristics, and the relative distribution of materials within the subsurface. Identification and characterization of these materials is essential for constraining surface-subsurface transport rates, modification and preservation timescales, and physical properties relevant for developing landing and sampling technology. It also has important implications for understanding the potential for habitability of these bodies, and for in-situ resource utilization during future exploration. This session will focus on the development of regoliths on icy and rocky surfaces through observational, theoretical, and laboratory investigations, and on the use of geomorphic, geophysical, and remote sensing techniques to investigate the state and distribution of rock, ice, and water on a variety of solar system bodies.
