Physics of the Global Heliosphere and Local Interstellar Medium I

Session Description:
Our Sun’s interaction with the interstellar medium controls the shape and processes in the boundary regions of the heliosphere and perturbs the local interstellar medium. Our understanding of this interaction is bolstered by in situ observations of the neutral wind, of pickup ions (PUIs) throughout the heliosphere, by Voyager observations of particles and fields in the boundary region and remote-sensing observations via energetic neutral atoms at 1 AU. Recently, these observations, among others, also demonstrate the importance of PUIs for the heliosphere dynamics and in the formation of the IBEX Ribbon. To obtain a physical understanding of the global heliosphere all of these data must be combined with theory and models of the underlying plasma physics. As we prepare for IMAP, it will be particularly important to understand how in situ measurements can be connected to remote-sensing data, and what role models can play in providing a reliable framework.
