PA23C:
Leveraging Social Media, Crowdsourcing, Citizen Science, and Emerging Technologies for Robust Scientific Understanding and Hazard Response II eLightning

Submit an Abstract to this Session

Session ID#: 61373

Session Description:
This session will cover the use of social media, crowdsourcing, citizen science, and emerging technology to understand and respond to hazards as well as participatory projects with robust scientific results resulting in published research and operational applications. For example, recent disasters have led to increasing use of these technologies for response efforts.  Organizations are increasingly interested in leveraging social media and crowdsourcing to obtain real-time updates and harness the power of the crowd. However, there are still misconceptions in the reliability of crowdsourced and citizen science data and how to use these data for operational purposes. Data from the public and emerging technologies can elucidate scientific problems at scales not otherwise tractable and also provide high quality and useful data. This session will provide an interdisciplinary forum for these results to be discussed broadly elucidating the scientific and operational potential of the emerging field of crowdsourcing and citizen science.
