Session Description:
Detailed spatio-temporal data on administrative units and boundaries, human settlements and infrastructure, population distribution, and land use/land cover are the foundations for more integrated sustainable development, including improved resilience to hazards, climate change, and geohealth threats. Remote sensing data from satellites, drones, and other platforms, transactional and consumer data, and crowd sourcing, together with traditional administrative data sources such as censuses and surveys, provide an increasingly complex and dynamic picture about human activity on the planet. Integrating these diverse data sources in usable ways is challenging, requiring careful attention to different units and scales of analysis, measurement and modeling limitations and assumptions, uncertainties and biases, and other factors. This session will report on efforts to improve generation of high-quality foundational data, promote understanding of the expanding suite of data products, develop intercomparison and validation frameworks, apply these data in diverse public- and private-sector applications, and address access and privacy issues.
