Session Description:
Observations-based global datasets of winds, temperature, and constituents throughout the mesosphere, thermosphere, and ionosphere (MTI), as well as field-aligned currents, magnetic perturbations, and particle precipitation from the magnetosphere are needed to provide ground-truth for computational models. These models include whole atmosphere models coupling the neutral atmosphere and ionosphere, and coupled models of magnetosphere-ionosphere processes such as current systems, conductivities, and precipitating and outflowing particles. Available observations in the MTI are sparse, though they are crucial for both constraining models using data assimilation (DA) and validation of model simulations. This session will focus on (1) recent progress in the field of DA in the MTI domain and existing and upcoming observations of the MTI region employing ground-based instruments (e.g., radar, lidar) and satellite missions (e.g., TIMED, ICON, GOLD); and (2) datasets and validation of physics-based, empirical, and assimilative models for magnetosphere-ionosphere coupling.
