Session Description:
Expanded data availability, advances in theoretical understanding, and increasingly sophisticated analytical tools have generally outpaced their practical application for landslide hazard and risk reduction. Despite the significant societal and economic impacts of landslides worldwide, reported occurrences are underestimated globally down to the local level. We invite exploration of these challenges from physical science, social science, technological, and multi-disciplinary perspectives. Documenting landslides is integral to improving our understanding of slope characteristics that lead to slide activity, as well as communicating their occurrence in the context of another natural hazard event. This session explores the tools and techniques of landslide inventory mapping, field investigations, susceptibility modeling and risk assessment. We further invite contributions describing case-studies, novel approaches, and stories of failure and obstacles overcome in the effort to work with communities at all scales and levels to reduce landslide losses.
