Predicting Extreme Events to Build Resilience to Natural Hazards

Session Description:
Natural disasters cause thousands of deaths and many billion dollars in damage worldwide annually. There are clear societal needs to better understand and mitigate the risks posed by natural hazards. The National Science Foundation program "Prediction of and Resilience against Extreme Events" (PREEVENTS) is designed to improve our scientific understanding of extreme events to advance predictability and risk assessment, and increase resilience in order to reduce societal impact. Research results are solicited that improve our understanding of the fundamental processes underlying natural hazards and lead to improved predictability and risk assessment of extreme events in the geosciences. Contributions are solicited on the prediction of hazards of extreme weather such as floods, droughts, hurricanes and tornadoes, or geophysical hazards due to earthquakes, landslides or geomagnetic storms. The session is open to all relevant investigations relating to extreme events, and those working in PREEVENTS teams are especially encouraged to submit.
