Safe Drinking Water Starts at the Source: Challenges in Source Water Protection Posters

Session Description:
Source water protection is the focused effort of protecting the quality and quantity of surface and groundwater that may serve as sources of drinking water, thereby protecting public health. Contamination of source waters can challenge the ability of drinking water utilities to provide safe drinking water. For example, contaminants may not be efficiently removed by conventional treatment technologies, may present a challenge for corrosion control, or may interact with treatment processes to cause the development of harmful disinfection byproducts (DBPs). Additionally, many of these contaminants have diffuse sources, making their management difficult. The goal of this session is to bring together researchers who focus on the sources, transport, and watershed controls of contaminants, and drinking water practitioners, who are responding to these challenges, to identify knowledge gaps and opportunities for collaborative development of solutions.
