Glass and Stone Cavities in Minerals: Melt Inclusions at 160 Years I

Session Description:
Melt inclusions are small pockets of a former melt enclosed in minerals. The first detailed description of melt inclusions with a rigorous geological and petrological context was in the 19th century by Sorby (1858). Sorby referred to melt inclusions containing glass as glass-cavities and those containing multiple crystalline phases as stone-cavities. In the last forty years, melt inclusions have been increasingly studied and widely used in many applications, becoming a universally accepted technique in mineralogy, geochemistry, and magmatic and metamorphic petrology. Because 2018 is 160 years since Sorby published his ground-breaking contribution, this session aims to celebrate the fundamental role that melt inclusions have played, currently play, and will play in the Earth and Space Sciences. We particularly encourage contributions on post-entrapment modifications, on analytical and experimental tools and techniques, and on the geochemical evolution of magmatic and metamorphic systems and extraterrestrial materials.
