V12B:
Crustal Formation, Fluid–Rock Reactions, and Subsurface Microbial Communities in the Samail Ophiolite: Results from the Oman Drilling Project and Related Research

Session ID#: 63833

Session Description:
The Oman Drilling Project (2016-2018) has obtained 1200 m of diamond drillcore from three boreholes in oceanic crust, 300 m from one hole at the base of the mantle section into the underlying metamorphic sole, 700 m from two holes in the crust-mantle transition zone, and 1000 m from three holes in partially serpentinized peridotite undergoing active alteration. Seven rotary holes for future water sampling and microbiological, geophysical and hydrological experiments, have been drilled in the crust-mantle transition zone and in altered peridotite. Most holes have been geophysically logged. IODP standard core description onboard the DV Chikyu has been supplemented with X-Ray CT and high resolution infrared scanning of the entire core, and XRF scanning of selected sections. This session will present new results from drilling, geophysical logging, and core analysis, as well as related research in the Samail ophiolite, and the oceanic lithosphere in general.
