Session Description:
The Smithsonian Environmental Research Center is 2,650 acre (1,072 ha) campus focused on ecosystem science at the terrestrial-aquatic interface. The campus includes temperate deciduous forests of mixed age, agricultural fields, meadows, streams, tidal marshes, and 12 miles (20 km) of Chesapeake Bay shoreline. Long-term research at the site seeks to integrate terrestrial and aquatic environments in a landscape perspective through long-term observations and experimental manipulations. The tour will begin at the Mathias Laboratory, a LEED Platinum research building that anchors the main campus, then outdoors to visit a variety of terrestrial, wetland, and aquatic research sites.
