Banded Iron Formation: Ancient Environments to Ore Deposits

Session Description:
Banded Iron Formation (BIF) successions represent unique records of ancient environments and early Earth processes. Yet unravelling this paleo-environmental history from the rock record is obscured by post-depositional processes. The latter are, in turn, fundamental to understanding the evolution of BIF as hosts to world-class gold and iron ore deposits. This session hopes to provide a forum for all BIF researchers to present their work on the occurrence, sedimentology, mineralogy, hydrothermal alteration and metamorphism of these cryptic rocks. We especially welcome process-oriented studies that seek a model for BIF genesis from deposition to diagenesis, metamorphism and mineralization.
