Human Activity and Urbanization as a Modifier of River Processes

Session Description:
Anthropogenic activities and urbanization in watersheds modify river processes.  With urbanization we have changes to flow and sediment regimes along with more direct modifications to channels.  To address what is perceived to be negative impacts we modify inputs and adjust stream morphology in an attempt to provide more resilience, greater stability and improved habitat conditions.  Rivers adjust to both urban impacts and our mitigation activities.  As such the urban impacts and mitigation measures can be seen as a modifying factor of stream processes.  Changes in the watershed and river processes due to urban development, stormwater management, stream restoration efforts, and other activities represents an important opportunity and challenge to fluvial geomorphologists.  We invite experimental, theoretical, numerical and field-based contributions on themes related to flow dynamics, ecohydrology, and stream restoration.
