Advances in Oil Sands Reclamation Research

Session Description:
Oil sand extraction activities in Northern Alberta result in large-scale removal of the surficial landscape. Accordingly, post-extraction reclamation of these areas requires that entire landforms and drainage systems be reconstructed. Until recently, reclamation research has mostly focused on performance assessment conducted on a smaller scale; however it is becoming more urgent to adopt a watershed-scale approach to research in post-extraction landscapes in order to evaluate the efficacy of current closure landscape designs. Characterizing the fluxes and stores of water and solutes both within the laboratory and in the field contribute to the understanding of watershed-scale hydrological and geochemical regimes in these constructed ecosystems.
The goal of this session is to bring together current research pertaining to reclamation of post-extraction oil sands landscapes conducted at different scales (laboratory to hillslope to watershed) to provide a balanced assessment of the current state of oil sands reclamation research.
