Session Description:
Rivers in northern latitudes and mountainous regions are subject to ice cover for a substantial portion of each year. River ice cover modifies hydraulic geometry and associated sediment transport capacity. Sediment transport rate can be greatest when the ice cover breaks up during spring freshet. River ice can also scour river banks and beds. These processes influence channel morphology, but are poorly quantified, largely due to the difficulty of winter field measurements. Furthermore, changing climate can influence the timing and location of river ice formation and dislocation, and thereby impact sedimentary dynamics and morphologies of northern rivers. Recent improvements in autonomous instrumentation have allowed for better examination of the complex processes occurring in ice-covered rivers. This session will focus on recent advances in understanding of river ice dynamics and winter sediment transport mechanics, with the goal of elucidating and modelling the mechanisms by which river ice influences channel morphology.
