Understanding the Biogeochemical Controls on Organic Matter Cycling in the Coastal Zone Posters

Session Description:
Coastal environments play a major role in the cycling organic matter (OM) delivered from land or produced in situ. They act as major conduits and repositories for OM in the coastal zone, and fuel CO­2­ exchanges between the ocean and the atmosphere. Estuaries and deltas have become increasingly affected by anthropogenic forcing such as land-use and climate changes. Understanding the controls on OM cycling in coastal environments is thus key to predicting the cumulative effects of anthropogenic forcing on the biogeochemistry of the ocean. We solicit contributions that provide novel information on the identification of mechanisms controlling OM preservation and degradation in deltas and estuaries at all temporal and spatial scales. We encourage contributions ranging from original analytical methods to molecularly describe preservation or degradation mechanisms, to studies on organic-inorganic interactions and gas-liquid-solid phase transitions in OM cycling, as well as work exploiting biogeochemical characterization of OM composition and cycling.
