Session Description:
The current pace of economic development is placing increasing demands on the exploitation of natural resources such as unconventional hydrocarbons, geothermal energy, minerals and deep groundwater resources. This economic development has also generated a significant increase in greenhouse gases, for which CO2 sequestration has appeared as a promising mitigation measure. These activities are complex and may have important environmental impacts, notably on shallow aquifers used for water supply. Aquifer vulnerability related to activities carried out at great depths is, nonetheless, poorly known, mainly because very little information is available on a possible connection between shallow and deep formations. Even when surficial aquifers have been well characterized, the origin, hydrodynamic properties and groundwater geochemistry of saline fluids found below these aquifers remain generally unknown. Targeted abstracts for this session focus on work linked to deep geological resources and to fluid sequestration in relation to potential environmental impacts, in particular on groundwater.
