Interactions Between Aquifers and Surface Water Reservoirs: New Approaches for Changing Conditions

Session Description:
The interactions and exchange of water between aquifers and surface water are crucial to providing water to rivers, lakes and wetlands. Not only are these interactions complex and spatially heterogeneous, they are increasingly modified by groundwater extraction, human development and climate change, in ways that are often difficult to identify. The conditions, triggers and thresholds under which groundwater-surface water connectivity is established or compromised are still poorly understood. New knowledge is needed to support the decision-making process at all levels of water management. This session will focus on research that provides innovative approaches to better understand the physical processes that drive exchanged flows between aquifers and surface reservoirs, from groundwater recharge to discharge. Abstracts are invited on original field methods to measure the interactions, new modelling approaches to simulate them, model applications in different climatic conditions and scales, as well as on the impacts of environmental change on interactions.
