New Developments and New Directions in Paleoenvironmental Studies of Wildfire in Canada Posters

Session Description:
Paleoecological tools such as tree-rings, lake sediments, soil charcoal, and historical photographs and documents have provided many insights into wildfire regimes in Canada prior to the development of modern fire monitoring programs.  Traditional views of fire as a catastrophic event that resets the landscape, or that maintains the “balance of nature,” have been replaced by the understanding that fire is a stochastic, non-equilibrium process that is an integral component of Canada’s forests, with complex consequences – many of them ecologically and economically important.  There have been many recent innovations in paleoenvironmental research that have allowed the examination of aspects of the fire regime that were previously not possible.  In this session we welcome papers that use novel techniques or that examine often overlooked aspects of the fire regime in order to understand how wildfire operated in the past, or use this information to inform future forest management and conservation decisions.
