Advancements in Environmental Site Assessment and Characterization I

Session Description:
Advances in environmental site characterization and assessment have led to the development of better site conceptual models which in turn has allowed for more focused and effective remediation of contamination within soil, groundwater and soil vapour. These advances include the specialization of academic programs, the development of remote- and direct-sensing tools along with more robust numerical models to aid in the understanding of the fate and transport of contaminants in the subsurface. These advances coupled with recent changes in legislation have impacted environmental impact assessments for brownfield redevelopment, resource exploration, advanced oil and mineral exploration, and project development. Most recently the federal government has revised the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act (CEAA, 2012) to focus on major project and projects likely to cause adverse effects including those involving oil sands , offshore oil and gas drilling, development and production; and large mining projects.
