Session Description:
The collision of solid planetary bodies in our Solar System provides a mechanism for shock wave generation with associated materials modification. This session will be a forum for the exchange of recent research results on terrestrial and extraterrestrial impact processes with emphasis on micro- to macro-scale shock-induced transformations. This includes considerations of melting through to solid-state effects from field to microscopic scales. We are particularly interested in linking shock intensity with spatial location within shocked media, as well as calibrating the various shock effects in terms of pressure and temperature regimes. Impact is a fundamental planetary process, with the identification and calibration of shock effects being critical for understanding the mechanisms at play.
