Session Description:
This session would include presentations that ‘solve case’ histories--- in taking particular LIPs (large igneous provinces) and using analytical techniques (mainly geochemistry) to 'interview' and 'investigate' the ‘suspect’-ed mechanisms and ultimately determine which are ‘guilty’ of producing the observed compositional patterns. More specifically this session would focus on using geochemistry (integrated with geochronology and paleomagnetic/magnetic fabric studies) as a tool to explore mantle sources, magma pathways and lithospheric/crustal interactions within a LIP system. Some LIPs consist of a dominant pulse with distinct geochemical ‘fingerprint ‘ implying restricted or localized chemical/isotopic processes within the plumbing system. Other LIPs exhibit more than one major pulse with a range of chemistries reflecting multiple magma batches and varied pathways and interactions within a more complicated plumbing system.
