Session Description:
Uranium has unique chemical and physical properties. Its redox sensitivity has been exploited as a tracer of earth evolution and its unique chemistry results in a spectrum of deposit types. Energy can be generated from the unique physical properties of uranium as a relatively clean source of nuclear energy, but development of innovative and sustainable resource extraction requires understanding the entire uranium geochemical cycle. The goal of this special session is to gather recent advances in understanding the global uranium cycle including the use of uranium in tracing redox environments and new approaches to uranium deposit exploration, nuclear waste disposal, and the fate and transport of uranium in surface and near surface environments. Contributions on subjects of uranium as a geochemical proxy for redox, behavior of uranium in various geologic settings including uranium mineralization, remediation of contaminated sites, and geologic disposal of spent nuclear fuel are strongly encouraged.
