Session Description:
Exchanges between groundwater and surface water occur throughout the landscape and support a plethora of key ecosystem services. The themes for this session are the interactions between groundwater and surface water, and their ecological implications. The health of many ecological systems is closely related to the physical-chemical properties of groundwater and surface water, and deterioration occurs when flow and composition of the water are changed by anthropogenic or natural processes. This session will focus on multidisciplinary research topics that advance our understanding of the fluxes and transformations of nutrients, including carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus and silicon, trace elements and contaminants at critical interfaces separating groundwater from surface water (e.g., hyporheic zones, riparian soils, seepage areas and subterranean estuaries), and assessing their consequences for ecosystem health and functioning, from the local to regional scale.
