Changing Cold Regions: Climate, Cryosphere, Hydrology, Ecology III

Session Description:
In recent decades, widespread changes in cold region Earth system processes have been observed, including atmospheric warming, altered precipitation patterns, declining snowcover, retreating glaciers, thawing permafrost, shifting hydrological regimes and changing terrestrial vegetation communities.  There is an urgent need for improved understanding of and predictive capacity for the dynamics of cold regions processes and systems at a wide range of scales.  This session invites submissions that address the observation, diagnosis, and/or prediction of one or more components of the changing cold regions Earth system:  atmosphere, snowpacks, glaciers, permafrost, hydrology and terrestrial vegetation, particularly in northern latitudes and mountain regions.  Research describing advancements in observations, process understanding, model development or model application towards this purpose and examples that link components of the cold regions Earth system to better understand the impacts of extreme events or rapid change are particularly welcome.
