Understanding and Predicting Groundwater Sustainability Under High Human Pressure Posters

Session Description:
Anthropogenic activities have been impacting the dynamics and quality of groundwater resources for decades. Examples are found in agricultural areas, where overexploitation is combined with increased recharge from irrigation return flow; urban areas, where intense withdrawals are combined with surface sealing and leaking from sewage systems, or in a variety of industrial contexts. These stresses impact drastically water balance and water quality. Generally, our considerations on groundwater cycle are based on an over-simplified interpretation of hydraulic heads or geochemical data. While understanding and predicting the evolution of groundwater flow pattern becomes a crucial challenge for a sustainable management of water resources, we do have to discuss how non-steady state impacts our interpretation of groundwater resources response to environmental forcing. This session encourages contributions on original case studies, innovative techniques and new proxies that provide qualitative and quantitative constraints on the water balance compounds (recharge, discharge, mixings) in highly anthropized aquifers.
