Session Description:
Rare earth element (REE) deposits form in a variety of tectonic settings (e.g., rifts, subductions, orogenesis) by a number of ore-forming processes (magmatic, hydrothermal, hybrid) from Precambrian to Phanerozoic times. Our understanding of REE deposits has significantly improved over the years but remains incomplete. The increasing global demand warrants a growing interest in exploration and exploitation industry. This session plans to provide a snapshot of the current understanding of these deposits. We invite contributions which address questions such as: In what tectonic setting were they emplaced? What are the roles of magmatic, metasomatic and supergene processes? What is the host mineralogy of the REE? How does this affect recovery and processing? What area the geochemical footprints of REE deposits? How do we explore for REE deposits?
