Session Description:
The formation of economic concentration of chromite, Ni-Cu-Co sulfides, PGE, Fe-Ti-V-P ore (ilmenite, magnetite, apatite) and REE minerals is the result of multiple potential processes, including fractional crystallization and accumulation, mineral sorting, magma mixing, assimilation and immiscibility. These magmatic massive to disseminated ore deposits are the crystallization products of a range of magma compositions including ultramafic and mafic basalts (from komatiites to evolved ferrobasalts), alkali-basalts and carbonatites. They are most commonly emplaced in continental flood basalts, layered intrusions and alkaline igneous complexes. This session aims to integrate recent developments in the study of ore forming processes based on field work and mapping, petrography of ore rocks (textures, CSD, 3D computed tomography), geochemistry (rock and mineral chemistry, stable and radiogenic isotopes, element mapping), experimental petrology and theoretical modelling.
