Enhancing Geoscientific Understanding of Marine and Lacustrine Systems With Modern Seafloor Mapping Techniques I

Session Description:
Scientific understanding of marine and lacustrine geologic processes has been enhanced multi-fold over the past two decades with the general use of multibeam sonars, interferometric sonars and other swath mapping techniques. By imaging ocean and lake floors with unprecedented detail, these methods have enhanced the power of seabed and lakebed researchers to interpret subaqueous morphology, sediment distribution, geological feature formation, and to monitor the activity of seafloor and lakefloor processes. This session invites presentations of enhanced scientific interpretation and explanation of seabed and lakebed issues and questions which have been facilitated by high-resolution seafloor mapping, commonly in conjunction with related investigations. Surveys leading to understanding of seabed/lakebed feature origins, geohazard and benthic habitat assessment, energy development, and Law of the Sea continental shelf extensions are some examples of investigations of scientific, and applied significance invited for presentation in this session.
