Plenary Session: Melt to glass: a peculiar transition and the rise of experimental volcanology

Session Description:
The solidification of magma in the partial absence of crystallization appears to be responsible for a vast array of both the details and the generalities of volcanic behavior. Far from being a simple single-valued transition from magma-to-rock it now appears that a complex interplay of degassing, phase proportions, and mechanical response drives the final ascent of those shallow magmatic systems that are prone to explosive behavior. Interpreting the remains of such volcanic events as well as experimentation into the basic mechanisms of their operation have both been placed on a wholly new foundation based on the recognition of the central role of this "glass" transition.
