Aligning Innovative Science Communication with the NGSS

Abstract:
Communicating science concepts using data visualization, innovative narratives and multi-media experiences can enhance student engagement and increase ocean literacy among wider audiences. Educators looking to use these tools in a formal education setting can find it hard to integrate them with their existing curriculum tied to local, state, and national standards. Aligning outreach materials with national standards, such as the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and the Ocean Literacy Framework, can make it easier for teachers to incorporate these experiences into their lessons. This presentation will explore ways to find correlations between the NGSS and concepts taught using immersive ocean education.
