Extremes, Abrupt Changes and Managing Risks

Matthew Collins, University of Exeter, CEMPS, Exeter, EX4, United Kingdom
Abstract:
Chapter 6 of the SROCC assesses extremes and abrupt or irreversible changes in the ocean and cryosphere in a changing climate, to identify regional hot spots, cascading effects, their impacts on human and natural systems, and climate-resilient disaster risk management strategies. This talk will cover the following phenomena; tropical and extratropical cyclones, marine heatwaves, extreme El Nino events, inter-ocean exchanges, abrupt changes in the ocean (specifically the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation), compound events and cascading impacts and the climate-relevant governance and policy options for disaster risk management. Headline results will be presented as well as the evidence supporting them.
