Abstract:
Coarse-graining, a method for low-pass spatial filtering, provides a means of disentangling the complex multi-scale dynamics in the ocean. This includes measuring the energy at various length-scales, as well as the rate of energy transfer between scales. We apply this analysis technique to multi-year global data from altimetry and models, analyze the temporal correlations between energetic exchanges, and compare various geographic locations. Through this, we seek to quantify some of the regional and seasonal trends of inter-scale energy transfers.
