TH13E:
MPOWIR: Building an Inclusive Community in Oceanography – How we can all contribute

Session ID#: 92134

Session Description:
MPOWIR (Mentoring Physical Oceanography Women to Increase Retention) is a community-led program providing mentoring to junior women in physical oceanography to improve their retention.  However, a decade of MPOWIR has demonstrated that mentoring of members of under-represented groups, while beneficial, is not alone sufficient to bring the cultural shift required to produce an inclusive and diverse community of scientists. Rather, action is needed from the majority group to reduce the structural barriers, biases, microaggressions, and harassment that force members of many under-represented groups out of science.   This broad ranging conversation will focus on the actions we can all take to build a more inclusive community, including aspects of awareness, bystander intervention, acting as an ally, proactive advocacy and community support.  The conversation will go beyond gender to include all aspects of identity and all disciplines of oceanography.  A brief plenary on diversity and inclusion will be followed by a diverse panel of individuals that will share their perspectives and incite a community conservation.  All members of the oceanographic community, regardless of gender or career stage, are encouraged to participate.  Lunch will be provided on a first come basis.
